Companies running .NET, SQL Server and Microsoft 365 often move to Azure because it fits what they already use. The early wins are real. The problems come later: resources created through the portal and never documented, networking that nobody fully understands, and identity spread across old Active Directory groups and new Entra ID roles.
A senior Azure engineer brings structure: landing zones, infrastructure as code, clear identity and access design, and services chosen for the workload.
Bicep or Terraform, reviewed and deployed through pipelines.
Entra ID, managed identities, RBAC and conditional access done properly.
App Service, Functions, Service Bus and Azure SQL in real production apps.
AKS or Container Apps with sensible scaling and security.
Azure Policy, management groups, tagging and budgets.
Monitor, Application Insights, alerts and tested backups.
Rising spend. Oversized App Service plans, idle VMs and premium SQL tiers chosen “to be safe” are common.
Identity gaps. Over-privileged accounts, missing conditional access and secrets stored in app settings instead of Key Vault create real risk.
Environments nobody can rebuild. Portal-built resources drift between environments and make disaster recovery slow.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Engineer (5–8 years). Builds with App Service, Functions, AKS, Azure SQL, Service Bus and Key Vault, defined in Bicep or Terraform, with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines.
Lead / Architect (8+ years). Owns landing zones, networking, Entra ID design, governance with Azure Policy, disaster recovery and cost management. Often holds the Solutions Architect Expert certification.
Migrations to Azure. Moving .NET apps, SQL Server databases and file servers from on-premise data centres
Modernisation. Moving apps from VMs to App Service, Functions or AKS
Landing zones and governance. Subscriptions, management groups, policies and networking set up properly
Identity and security. Entra ID, managed identities, Key Vault and Defender for Cloud recommendations
Week one. They review subscriptions, networking, identity, infrastructure code and the largest cost items.
Weeks two and three. First changes delivered through code and pipelines, with quick wins on security and sizing.
Week four. A written plan covering governance, identity, cost and modernisation, ranked by risk and impact.
Building in the portal. Click-built resources cannot be reviewed or recreated. Everything should live in Bicep or Terraform.
Ignoring identity. Most Azure security issues start with identity. Managed identities and least privilege should be the default.
Picking premium tiers by default. Start right-sized and scale based on measured load.
