Django gives teams an ORM, admin, authentication, forms and security protections out of the box. Many projects still end up reinventing those pieces, or using them in ways that cause trouble at scale: N+1 queries hidden in templates, business logic scattered across views, and an admin that slows to a crawl on large tables.
A senior Django developer uses the framework’s conventions well, keeps the data layer efficient, and plans upgrades so the app doesn’t fall behind supported versions.
select_related, prefetch_related, indexes and query counts.
Serializers, permissions, pagination and versioning.
Celery or similar with retries and monitoring.
CSRF, authentication, permissions and dependency updates.
pytest suites that run fast and catch regressions.
Planned moves between Django versions.
Slow pages and APIs. Missing select_related and prefetch_related calls multiply database queries.
Outdated, unsupported versions. Apps stuck on old Django releases stop getting security fixes.
Hard-to-change code. Fat views and tangled signals make every change risky.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Developer (5–8 years). Builds features and APIs with Django and Django REST Framework, writes efficient ORM queries, uses Celery for background work and writes tests with pytest.
Lead / Architect (8+ years). Owns application structure, upgrades, database design, caching, async support and decisions about splitting services.
REST APIs. Django REST Framework APIs for web and mobile clients, with authentication and versioning
Upgrades. Moving to current Django and Python versions with tests in place
Performance work. Query optimisation, caching and background job tuning
Admin and internal tools. Fast, usable Django admin and internal dashboards for operations teams
Week one. They set up the project locally, run the tests and review versions, settings and slow endpoints.
Weeks two and three. First features or fixes shipped with tests, plus quick query optimisations.
Week four. A written plan for upgrades, performance and code structure.
Ignoring the ORM’s query count. Use Django Debug Toolbar or query logging and fix N+1 queries early.
Putting everything in views. Service layers or model methods keep logic testable.
Skipping upgrades. Each skipped release makes the next one harder.
