Magento, now Adobe Commerce, suits businesses with complicated catalogues, multiple store views, B2B pricing and heavy integration needs. That flexibility is also why so many Magento stores become hard to maintain. Extensions from different vendors override the same classes, core files get edited under deadline pressure, and each upgrade turns into a small project.
A senior Magento developer works with the framework instead of around it: plugins and observers instead of rewrites, dependency injection used properly, and custom modules that survive the next patch release.
Plugins, observers, dependency injection and service contracts used the way Magento intends.
Moving stores between versions and applying security patches without downtime surprises.
Varnish, Redis, indexers, and queries that hold up during sales.
Luma, Hyvä and headless experience, with a view on which suits your store.
ERP, PIM, payment and shipping integrations through APIs and message queues.
Coding standards, static analysis and tests that make reviews meaningful.
Security patches get skipped. When upgrades are painful, stores fall behind on patches, and outdated ecommerce sites are a common target for card-skimming attacks.
Slow storefronts. Poor indexing setup, missing full-page cache configuration and heavy Luma-based themes all cost load time and conversions.
Extension conflicts. Two extensions rewriting the same class can break checkout in ways that only show up under real traffic.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Developer (5–8 years). Builds custom modules, plugins, observers and GraphQL or REST endpoints in Magento 2. Comfortable with indexers, cron, Varnish and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
Lead / Architect (8+ years). Owns upgrades, multi-store and B2B architecture, ERP and PIM integrations, infrastructure choices and code review standards.
Upgrades and patching. Moving to supported Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce versions and keeping up with security patches
Performance work. Full-page cache, Varnish, indexing, database tuning and theme clean-up
Hyvä and PWA front ends. Rebuilding slow Luma themes in Hyvä, or headless storefronts using PWA Studio or another framework
B2B and integrations. Shared catalogues, company accounts, quotes, and connections to ERP, PIM and OMS systems
Week one. They audit your version, extensions, custom modules and hosting setup, and note anything blocking the next upgrade.
Weeks two and three. First fixes or features delivered as clean modules through your deployment pipeline, with code review.
Week four. A written plan covering patches, performance and extension clean-up, in a sensible order.
Editing core files. Any change to core code is lost or broken at the next upgrade. Everything belongs in modules.
Too many extensions. Each extension adds risk. Ask which ones could be removed or replaced with a small custom module.
Treating Magento like generic PHP. Laravel or WordPress experience does not cover Magento’s DI, plugins, layout XML and indexers.
