Spring Boot makes it quick to start a new service, and that is how many teams end up with dozens of them. Each one calls three others synchronously, shares a database with a neighbour, and fails in interesting ways when one dependency slows down. Upgrading to Spring Boot 3 and Java 17 or 21 keeps slipping because nobody is sure what will break.
A senior Spring Boot developer designs services with clear boundaries, handles failure deliberately, and keeps the stack on supported versions.
Boot, Data, Security and configuration used with intent.
Timeouts, retries, circuit breakers and idempotency.
Kafka or RabbitMQ in production.
JUnit, Testcontainers and contract tests.
Memory, startup and profiling in containers.
Spring Boot 3 and modern Java migrations.
Cascading failures. Without timeouts, retries and circuit breakers, one slow service takes down others.
Unsupported versions. Older Spring Boot and Java versions stop receiving security fixes.
Slow startup and high memory. Poor configuration makes services expensive to run in containers.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Developer (5–8 years). Builds REST and event-driven services with Spring Boot, Spring Data and Spring Security, writes tests with JUnit and Testcontainers, and deploys in containers.
Lead / Architect (8+ years). Owns service boundaries, messaging design with Kafka or RabbitMQ, observability, Spring Boot 3 migration and performance on the JVM.
Spring Boot 3 migrations. Moving to Spring Boot 3, Jakarta EE namespaces and Java 17 or 21
Microservices. New services or splitting a monolith, with clear ownership and contracts
Event-driven systems. Kafka or RabbitMQ consumers and producers with idempotent processing
Security. Spring Security with OAuth2 and OpenID Connect
Week one. They review service boundaries, versions, configuration, monitoring and the slowest endpoints.
Weeks two and three. First features or fixes delivered with tests and through your pipeline.
Week four. A written plan for upgrades, resilience and service clean-up.
Synchronous calls everywhere. Use events or asynchronous patterns where services don’t need an immediate answer.
Shared databases. Services sharing tables can’t change independently.
Testing only with mocks. Testcontainers catch problems that mocks hide.
