Plenty of codebases are written in TypeScript and still behave like JavaScript. Strict mode is off, any appears in hundreds of places, and API responses are cast to whatever type is convenient. The compiler is running, but it isn’t catching much.
A senior TypeScript developer uses types to describe the real shape of your data, from the API boundary to the UI, so whole classes of bugs never reach production.
Comfortable with strict mode and eliminating any.
Zod or similar at every external boundary.
Expressive types that stay readable.
React, Next.js, Node.js or NestJS in production.
tsconfig, build tools, linting and monorepos.
Unit and integration tests alongside types.
Bugs the compiler should have caught. Loose types let undefined values and wrong shapes through to runtime.
Slow refactoring. Without reliable types, teams are afraid to rename or restructure code.
Front end and back end drifting apart. Without shared types or schemas, API changes break clients silently.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Developer (5–8 years). Writes strict TypeScript in React, Node.js or both, uses generics and discriminated unions sensibly, and validates external data with tools like Zod.
Lead / Architect (8+ years). Owns monorepo setup, shared type packages, API contracts, build tooling and migration strategy from JavaScript.
JavaScript to TypeScript migrations. Gradual migrations that turn on strictness step by step
Full stack TypeScript. React or Next.js front ends with Node.js back ends sharing types
Monorepos and tooling. Turborepo or Nx setups, shared packages and fast builds
API contracts. Typed clients from OpenAPI, tRPC or GraphQL schemas
Week one. They review your tsconfig, the amount of any, build tooling and how API data is typed.
Weeks two and three. First features shipped with strict types, plus quick wins in the most error-prone module.
Week four. A written plan to raise type safety across the codebase without a big-bang rewrite.
Leaving strict mode off. It hides most of the value. Turn it on gradually, but turn it on.
Trusting external data. Types don’t validate runtime data. Validate at the boundary.
Over-engineering types. Clever type gymnastics nobody can read are their own maintenance cost.
