Most ServiceNow problems start with a reasonable request. A team wants a field, a rule, a slightly different approval. Someone writes a business rule, then a client script, then modifies an out-of-the-box script include because it was faster. Two years later the instance has hundreds of customisations, every family release takes weeks of regression testing, and nobody is sure which changes still matter.
A senior ServiceNow developer works the other way round. They start from what the platform already does, configure before they customise, and leave the instance in a state the next upgrade can handle. That habit saves more money than any single feature they build.
Knowing when a flow, UI policy or data policy beats a script, and saying so when a request would hurt upgrades.
Experience reviewing skipped updates and planning family release upgrades without breaking production.
Efficient GlideRecord use, no queries in loops, async business rules where they belong, and readable script includes.
REST APIs, IntegrationHub, MID Server and import sets, with error handling that someone can support at 2am.
Building custom apps in their own scope with clean tables, roles and ACLs.
Automated Test Framework suites for the catalogue items and flows your business depends on.
Upgrades turn into projects. Each modified out-of-the-box record becomes a skipped update that someone has to review by hand. Instances with heavy customisation often fall a release or two behind, and support for older releases does not last forever.
Performance degrades quietly. Synchronous business rules on busy tables, GlideRecord queries inside loops and client scripts that call the server on every field change make forms slow. Agents notice before anyone measures it.
Licences get wasted. Teams buy modules like HR Service Delivery or Customer Service Management and then rebuild in custom tables what the module already provides.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Developer (5–8 years). Builds catalogue items, flows, integrations and scoped apps to a clear design. Knows Flow Designer, IntegrationHub and when a script is justified. Holds the Certified Application Developer credential or equivalent experience.
Technical Architect (8+ years). Owns the instance roadmap, data model and upgrade strategy, sets coding standards and decides what stays out of the box. Can lead a clean-up of an over-customised instance.
ITSM implementations and clean-ups. Incident, problem, change and request configured close to the platform defaults, plus the reporting service owners rely on
Service catalogue and Flow Designer work. Catalogue items, variable sets and flows that replace old workflows and scripted approvals
Integrations. REST and SOAP integrations, IntegrationHub spokes, MID Server work and connections to Jira, Azure DevOps, SAP or HR systems
HRSD and CSM rollouts. Configuring HR Service Delivery or Customer Service Management modules without rebuilding what they already include
Week one. They read the instance before they change it: update sets, customised out-of-the-box records, and the scripts that run on your busiest tables.
Weeks two and three. First changes in a sub-production instance, with update sets or app repo promotion agreed with your team. Expect questions about why existing customisations were made.
Week four. A short written list of risks they found, such as skipped upgrade records, slow scripts or duplicated logic, with a suggested order to fix them.
Hiring an admin for developer work. Admins configure forms, lists and users. Integrations, scoped apps and scripting need a developer, and the reverse is an expensive way to change a form.
Customising instead of configuring. Modifying out-of-the-box records is the fastest route to painful upgrades. Ask every candidate how they would avoid it.
Skipping the ATF. Without Automated Test Framework coverage, every upgrade is tested by hand. A senior developer adds tests for the flows that matter most.
