Teams usually choose Google Cloud for BigQuery, GKE or Cloud Run, and those services are excellent. The foundations underneath often get less attention: projects created ad hoc, service accounts with owner rights, networking split across shared VPCs nobody documented, and BigQuery costs that jump when someone runs an unbounded query.
A senior GCP engineer sets up the organisation, projects, IAM and networking properly, then builds on the managed services that make Google Cloud worth choosing.
Terraform with reviewed changes.
Least-privilege roles and workload identity.
Cloud Run and GKE in production.
Partitioning, clustering and cost control.
Shared VPCs, private access and hybrid connectivity.
Cloud Monitoring, logging and alerting.
Surprise BigQuery bills. Queries that scan whole tables without partitioning or clustering are expensive.
Over-privileged service accounts. Broad roles and downloaded keys are a common security weakness.
Inconsistent environments. Console-built resources drift between projects.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Engineer (5–8 years). Builds on Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL and BigQuery, defined in Terraform, with Cloud Build or GitHub Actions.
Lead / Architect (8+ years). Owns organisation and folder structure, IAM, VPC design, security baselines, cost governance and migrations. Often holds Professional Cloud Architect certification.
Migrations to GCP. Moving applications and data from on-premise or other clouds
Containers on Cloud Run and GKE. Serverless containers or managed Kubernetes for your services
BigQuery platforms. Data warehouses with partitioning, clustering and cost controls
Foundations and security. Organisation policies, IAM, VPC Service Controls and logging
Week one. They review organisation structure, IAM, networking, Terraform and the top cost drivers.
Weeks two and three. First infrastructure changes through code, plus quick security and cost wins.
Week four. A written plan for foundations, security and cost, ranked by risk.
Creating projects ad hoc. A folder and project structure makes billing and access manageable.
Using service account keys. Workload identity is safer than downloaded keys.
Unbounded BigQuery queries. Partitioning, clustering and query limits prevent costly mistakes.
Rates depend on seniority, scope and engagement length. See the cost guide for market ranges, or tell us the role and we will give you a firm number.
