Odoo is popular with growing businesses because it covers sales, inventory, accounting, manufacturing and HR in one system at a fraction of the cost of larger ERPs. The risk comes with customisation. Each module someone overrides, each field added directly to a core model and each report rebuilt from scratch makes the next version upgrade harder.
A senior Odoo developer knows which needs the standard apps already meet, builds what is missing as clean custom modules, and keeps your instance on a path to the next release.
Efficient models, stored computed fields and queries that scale.
Extending core models and views without modifying them.
Understanding how sales, stock and accounting connect in Odoo.
Moving modules and data between major versions safely.
QWeb reports, OWL components and website or portal work.
APIs, payment, shipping and e-invoicing connections.
Stuck on an old version. Heavy customisation makes migrations expensive, so companies stay on unsupported versions longer than they should.
Slow screens and reports. Computed fields without storage, inefficient ORM queries and large unindexed tables slow everyday work.
Accounting surprises. Customisations that touch invoicing or stock valuation without understanding the accounting impact cause problems at month end.
Every engineer we put forward has at least five years of hands-on experience. Within that, here is how the levels differ.
Senior Developer (5–8 years). Builds custom modules in Python and the Odoo ORM, QWeb reports, OWL front-end components and integrations through XML-RPC or JSON-RPC. Knows the standard apps well.
Lead / Functional Architect (8+ years). Owns implementation design, data migration, version upgrades, multi-company setups and the balance between configuration and code.
Implementations. Setting up sales, purchase, inventory, accounting or manufacturing with as little custom code as possible
Version migrations. Moving custom modules and data to a newer Odoo version with testing at each step
Custom modules. Industry-specific features built as separate modules that do not touch core code
Integrations. Connections to e-commerce, payment gateways, logistics and government e-invoicing systems
Week one. They review your version, edition, installed apps, custom modules and any pending upgrade.
Weeks two and three. First fixes or features delivered as custom modules on a staging copy, tested with your users.
Week four. A written plan covering upgrade readiness, performance and customisations that could be retired.
Customising before configuring. Odoo’s standard apps cover more than most teams expect. Check them first.
Editing core modules. Changes belong in custom modules that inherit from core models, or upgrades break.
Ignoring accounting. Inventory and invoicing customisations need someone who understands the accounting effect.
